Define Clinic’s London dermatology team is led by Dr Benji Dhillon. Every patient who comes to us with a mole concern is seen and properly assessed by our clinical team before any removal takes place.
We offer mole checks, clinical assessments, and mole removal using the technique best suited to each mole. All tissue surgically removed at Define Clinic is sent for histopathology testing as standard.

Assessment Before Removal
We do not remove moles without first understanding what they are. Every patient has a clinical assessment before any procedure is discussed. We will examine the mole, take a history, and use dermoscopy where appropriate.
Histopathology as Standard
All moles surgically removed at Define Clinic London are sent to a laboratory for analysis. You receive both written confirmation of the results and a follow up appointment to discuss the outcome.
Technique Matched to the Mole
The removal method is chosen based on the type, size, location, and clinical presentation of the mole. A cosmetic mole and a potentially atypical mole are handled differently. Our team will explain which technique is appropriate for you.
Removal Methods
Surgical Excision
The mole and a small margin of surrounding skin are removed under local anaesthetic. The wound is closed with sutures, and the tissue is sent for histopathology. This is the preferred method when there is any clinical concern about the mole.
Shave Removal
Used for raised moles that sit above the skin surface. The mole is shaved flush with the skin under local anaesthetic. No sutures required in most cases. Suitable for benign raised moles where full depth removal is not needed.
Laser Removal
Suitable for certain flat, previously assessed benign moles. A laser does not produce a tissue sample, so it is not appropriate where there is any clinical concern about the nature of the mole.
When to Get a Mole Checked
Use the ABCDE checklist to monitor your moles at home:
- Asymmetry: one half does not match the other
- Border: edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred
- Colour: more than one shade, or uneven colour
- Diameter: larger than 6mm across
- Evolution: change in size, shape, colour, or texture
Other signs to check for: bleeding, crusting, itching, or a previously flat mole that has become raised. If you are in any doubt, book a clinical consultation.
Types of Moles
Common Moles
Small, round or oval, with defined edges and a uniform colour. The majority of moles fall into this category and are entirely benign.
Congenital Moles
Present at birth. Larger congenital moles warrant regular monitoring.
Atypical Moles
Larger than average, often with irregular shape, uneven borders, or more than one colour. Not cancerous, but worth monitoring closely and, in some cases, removing.
What to Expect
Consultation
Starting from £200. We examine the moles’ history and advise on next steps. Consultation fees are non-refundable and charged separately from any treatment.
The Procedure
Carried out under local anaesthetic. Most sessions take 20 to 45 minutes. Patients consistently find it less daunting than expected.
Aftercare
Written aftercare instructions are provided. Stitches, where used, are removed after one to two weeks. Our team is available if you have questions during recovery.
Histopathology Results
Where tissue has been sent for laboratory analysis, you will be informed of results and advised on whether any follow-up is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is mole removal painful?
Carried out under local anaesthetic. You should feel no significant pain during removal. The area may feel tender for a few days afterwards.
Will it leave a scar?
All removal leaves some change to the skin. Surgical excision leaves a linear scar that fades over several months. Our team will explain what to expect for your specific mole at the consultation.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If a mole appears clinically concerning and an NHS assessment is in your best interest, we will advise accordingly.
What is the difference between private and NHS mole removal?
The NHS removes moles where there is clinical concern about malignancy. Cosmetic removal of benign moles is not routinely available on the NHS. Define Clinic offers both clinical assessment and cosmetic removal of assessed benign moles.

This was my first time ever getting any cosmetic procedure done, and I’m so glad I chose to have this experience done at define with Rosie. Going into my appointment, I was feeling a little apprehensive as to how my results were going to turn out. I just wanted something to help get rid of a few lines on my forehead without anyone noticing that I had anything done. Rosie took all of my points into consideration and she exceeded my expectations. Not only did she try to calm my nerves by bringing me water and making sure my experience was enjoyable, she also made sure that I was completely comfortable with everything she was doing and she made sure that I had all the knowledge I needed before I continued with the procedure.
One thing I will say about define, it’s a little on the pricier side however, it is worth every penny. You are paying for quality and good results!

I had Botox treatment for the first time ever back in 2021, with Dr Teuta Berisha. I have since gone back twice for a top-up and will remain a loyal client of hers. I am very picky and (understandably) selective with my face, but Dr Berisha made me so comfortable and her attention to detail is to be praised.
