Melasma is a type of skin pigmentation that takes on the form of brown patches on the face – usually on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. Melasma is also known as the mask of pregnancy, and is usually the result of hormonal changes relating to pregnancy, contraception, polycystic ovaries or menopause, though it can also be genetic or caused by sun exposure.

Laser skin treatments, such as IPL or Laser Skin Resurfacing can be used to treat melasma, penetrating the superficial layers of skin for delivering targeted treatments directly to the deepest layers of the dermis.
