Porcelain Veneers

  • Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, translucent shells.
  • They are commonly used to restore form and function to the smile, correcting the appearance of teeth.

A firm favourite in cosmetic dentistry when it comes to celebrities, porcelain veneers can be used to makeover your smile to create “perfect” teeth, with uniform shape and clean, white colour.

Porcelain veneers are the treatment of choice for many of the patients at Define Clinic that are looking to achieve dazzling, radiant results.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, translucent shells made of porcelain, which mimic the appearance of the teeth. They are commonly used to restore form and function to the smile, correcting the appearance of teeth affected by tooth wear, chips, gaps, discolouration and misalignments. Porcelain veneers provide a discreet, long-lasting solution to your smile concerns, and bespoke design is possible, including custom-shading to your own tooth colour for a flawless transition and natural results.

The main purpose of porcelain veneers is to craft the appearance of a straight, even smile, and so they are most commonly used to conceal flaws in the teeth that prevent that. They can be used to achieve the ideal shape and size, mask cracked or chipped teeth, covering discolouration for a brighter, whiter smile, or add symmetry to a worn-down, misaligned smile. During the procedure, veneers are bonded directly to the tooth, thus improving the appearance of many aspects of natural structure. A uniform smile with teeth of the ideal shape and size is the key to healthy-looking teeth and a more youthful overall appearance, and porcelain veneers are a versatile treatment that can help you towards these goals.

At Define Clinic, our cosmetic dentistry team is headed by award-winning dentist, Dr Mark Hughes, and provide high-quality porcelain veneer treatment perfected over many years of extensive experience and training. We always aim to provide our patients with effective improvements to their natural beauty by enhancing the appearance of their smile in style and luxury.

Frequently asked questions

Porcelain veneers provide the most perfect, beautiful, and natural enhancement to your smile, and can be custom designed for you. This makes them an excellent treatment for a variety of smile concerns. However, it is worth considering that porcelain veneers are a costly, irreversible treatment that will require upkeep and replacements across your lifetime, and most patients will need to undergo some form of tooth reduction to prepare prior to veneer placement. At your consultation with Dr Hughes, you will be made fully aware of the pros and cons of porcelain veneer treatment and any alternative treatments available to ensure it’s right for you.
Upon your first visit to Define Clinic, you will be welcomed into our comprehensive consultation process. As well as examining the teeth, this will allow our team of smile experts to ensure you fully understand the treatment and what is involved, as well as get an idea of the goals you have for your smile and formulate a personalised smile plan. You will then have multiple opportunities to refine, tweak, and amend your plan before undergoing the treatment. This is especially important, as once the porcelain veneers are bonded to your teeth, as they are not removable once bonded on.
At Define Clinic, we strongly believe our patients should be able to undergo luxury treatments in a state of comfort and relaxation, and so we offer the use pain free local anaesthetic during all our procedures. However, depending on the amount of tooth preparation needed, anaesthetic may not be necessary for all patients.
As Porcelain veneers are an irreversible treatment, with the preparation process often (but not always) requiring the removal of a very thin layer of tooth enamel, in order to ensure the smile does not appear “bulky” and to make sure the veneers are strong enough to withstand the forces or daily chewing. Therefore it is important to be certain that this is the treatment for you. Our consultation process will help you to decide between porcelain veneers and alternate treatments, and you will be provided with every opportunity to make amends to your smile plan before undergoing the procedure. Dr Hughes and his team work within a strict ethical guideline, and will never try to convince you to undergo unnecessary cosmetic enhancement, so you can fully trust their judgement when it comes to recommending the best treatment to meet your smile goals.
Porcelain veneers are made to mimic natural teeth and can in some cases make them much stronger. Normal oral hygiene practices required to maintain excellent dental health, including brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups are necessary. Patients prone to teeth grinding may require a protective bite guard to wear at night to reduce damage to veneers.
Most patients experience some mild sensitivity to hot and cold food and drink in the days following preparation and placement of their veneers, though this is usually temporary. Avoiding extreme temperature foods for the first few days and allowing porcelain veneers to settle usually helps avoid this.
Most patients will find their porcelain veneers can last between ten and twenty years before needing a replacement. We offer a full 5 year warranty* for all our porcelain dental restorations. Veneers that crack chip or fall off can be rebonded or replaced.
